Rocking the Music Industry
A&M Records v Napster (semi-legal)
Committee Description
It’s the early 2000s, the internet is in its golden age and the digital revolution is upon us! Yet, in this period of great technological advancement, the question of what is just and unjust in cyberspace is mostly unanswered. Napster, an audio-sharing application company, is being sued by record executives and pop culture icons for supposed copyright infringement. Musical artists are fighting for their right to control the distribution of their songs, while Napster is advocating for wider accessibility. By jumping into the shoes of prominent artists, record company executives, and Napster creators, delegates will be charged to find the balance between sharing the power of music and protecting entertainers’ intellectual property. With a focus on the integrity of artists’ rights, this committee will reimagine this legal trial and decide the future of music streaming.

Lina Li
Chair
Hi everyone! My name is Lina, and I am currently a third year at McGill Law. I had a lovely time on the MariMUN exec team in 2020-2021 (yes, the COVID year), so it warms my heart to finally be back in person! I had actually never done MUN before going to Mari, so my biggest advice is to be brave and be confident (even if it is fake)—we all have to start somewhere. Having had some experience working in intellectual property law, I hope you are all as excited as me for this weekend of dynamic debate!
Jiayin Zhou
Vice Chair
Jiayin, a law student at McGill University, served as USG of Crises in 2021 and later as Secretary-General in 2023 of MariMUN. Her unconventional yet effective advice for delegates? Step beyond comfort zones by refraining from reading speeches, fostering genuine engagement and spontaneity!
